a note from the seller
I am selling my house that closed on my birthday in 2002. My eldest daughter was then not barely a year. Her sister was born two years later. I have lived and traveled all over the world, but this house is one of the few places I would call home. The girls learned to walk here, and quickly filled the house with music, song, and dance. When tired, we snuggled up and watched movie marathons that we re-watched just recently to say goodbye. The house held our screaming murder mystery birthday parties, and screaming matches, some for real and many make believe as the youngest forayed into acting. Being in the heart of downtown, this home provided a launching off pad for my children, for them to explore sports, then the arts - one becoming a musician and the other an actor/entrepreneur. Their teachers and mentors were either a walk or subway ride away. A skip from the subway and the centre of city, we accessed the museums and art galleries on rainy and snowy days, and after popped into Yorkville’s Sassafraz, owned by one of our neighbours, for hot chocolate. In summer our back patio, somehow secluded from the noise of a busy downtown, became a focal point for BBQs and long lingering dinners with friends and family. A stroll away, there is Shakespeare in the Park, Taste of the Danforth, great theatre, power walks and bike rides in our parks and of course, restaurants - authentic Greek, Cuban, Ethiopian, Indian, Nepalese, Lebanese, Japanese….
Serrano’s Bakery, featured in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, were terribly naughty, always sneaking the girls sweets. And of course, we have The Big Carrot - one of the original organic super stores - a stones throw away. Our home was a refuge for our guests, guests from around the world who would visit and sometimes stay here for months at a time. This house was filled with their energies as much as ours; change makers, spiritualists, artists, musicians, actors, and thinkers. If they played an instrument, danced or acted, we’d all share of our talents, our dreams, and then passions, the conversations moving from philosophy to physics, arts and politics to psychology. The house held my spring book club - one of the longest running in the GTA - with the wind and lilac scents from the trees outside winding through open windows. The proximity of the DVP and Gardiner allowed us easy get aways, too, to Muskoka to see family, Caledon to be with our friends, the airport to travel for work and our pleasure. The house was a sanctuary from the storms outside. We were isolated enough here, to detach and heal from the outside world when we needed to, so we could go back into it, stronger, healthier and more alive. We are part of a community, where neighbours still know each other’s names and help each other. But alas, a house, a good house, is the bricks and mortar foundation. Like the house, itself, we have grown, and for us that involves us moving to different places - universities and new cities - abroad. Where we go, this house is the platform on which we stand. If I could take the house with me, I would! So we hope whoever buys this home - which before us was also owned by a family who stayed for more than 20 years and loved it as much as we do - grows with it too. Enjoy its silences; it’s creativity; it’s inspiration, and invite the world inside to listen, too, and share. Many who visit say this home feels like an oasis. I now pass it on to someone else.
